NZ Secondary Schools Girls Football Tournament - Gary Sowden Trophy
Click to zoom or order Players from the Burnside Girls Football team celebrate after scoring in their 3-0 win over Otago Girls High School in the final of the Gary Sowden Trophy held at the Caledonian Sports Ground today.

Sixteen teams from throughout the lower South Island competed in the four day tournament held in Dunedin culminating in the final held on the Thursday. The Burnside team from Christchurch proved too strong for the local girls from Otago Girls High School with two goals in the first half and another in the second half to round off their unbeaten run through the tournament. ITM Cup Rugby - Otago v Taranaki

In another dismal display that gave loyal fans little to cheer about the hapless Otago team crashed to their fifth straight loss going down 25-15 to the visitors from the North.

The loss firmly cements Otago at the bottom of the championship points table with the zero from five record and just the one bonus point to their name. On the positive side Otago scored two tries, one to lock Hoani Matenga, and the other to promising young prop Halani Aulika in his first start for the season, but there was little else for the coaching staff to take away from the game...»read more

Around 140 guests bid on a variety of items donated by local businesses with proceeds going to helping families within the Otago/Southland region who have been involved in some way with the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Fifteen U19 teams and nine U21 teams from the twelve NZ netball regions will compete in the four day tournament that is an important part of the development of emerging netball from throughout New Zealand.
