Shirley Valentine |
| |
Regent Theatre, Friday 3 July 2009 |
Nancy Schroder of Shortland Street and Hercules fame as the highly funny, ever insightful, Shirley Valentine in the timeless Willy Russell play that featured at Dunedin's Regent Theatre this evening. Billed as "a brilliantly scripted, heart-warming, laugh-out-loud, fantastic girlie night out!" it certainly lived up to the pre-show hype as a good sized audience enjoyed a good old fashioned giggle as Shirley's journey of self discovery unfolds. The one night only play doubled as a fund raiser for the Otago Community Hospice to support their fantastic services they provide to the Otago community.
This hilarious production, set in 1980’s Liverpool is the story of an ordinary housewife, Shirley Valentine-Bradshaw, who on a journey of rediscovery finds herself a new life. Shirley has always been able to see the funny side of any situation, she was a high school rebel but is now a housewife and mother who one day looks back at her life and realises that she has lost touch with her dreams. When her best friend wins a magazine contest and asks Shirley to accompany her on a two-week vacation in Greece… On the Island of Mykonos, Shirley luxuriates among, sun, sand and taramasalata, and encounters islander Costas Caldes and falls in love … with life.
