City Events - Annual St Clair Surf Life Saving Midwinter Polar Plunge
St Clair Beach, Dunedin. Sunday 27 June 2010

Hundreds of brave midwinter revelers - or absolute nutters; race to be first in to the chilly waters of St Clair Beach as thousands look on from the Esplanade above. Locals got in to the spirit of the occasion dressing up as Santas, smurfs, sea creatures and a variety of other colourful, wacky outfits.

The annual event, run in conjunction with MoreFM, acts as a fundraiser for the local St Clair Surf Lifeguard Club with participants providing a gold coin donation to take part.

A few minor touch ups to these colourful outfits as this group prepares for the fancy dress competition. Fun for all ages with the little ones getting in to the spirit as well with super hero costumes and sea creatures prominent.
The Grim Reaper (left) prepares for what lies ahead as some pirates (the local rugby club of course!) go in to a team huddle to psych themselves up for the challenge. MoreFM Breakfast Show hosts Damian & Nicky get the crowd worked up just before the start and it's all thumbs up as the hooter is about to sound.
The hooter goes and the mad dash for the water begins as revelers of all colours, shapes and sizes rush in to the chilly surf.
Some outfits might look good on dry land but soon display certain characteristics that their creators may not have thought to much about when they venture in to the water! For some it's a quick dip and out but others just can't get enough.

Once out of the water it's up to the Esplanade for a hot cup of soup and a hot pie or a warm shower courtesy of the NZ Fire Service crew. The massive crowd on the Esplanade slowly make their way home after another successful Polar Plunge. Time to start thinking about what to dress up in next year!
