City Events - Cadbury Jaffa Race & World's Steepest Street Party
Baldwin St, Dunedin. Friday 17 July 2009

A wave of Giant Jaffas heads down Baldwin Street - the steepest street in the world, at today's Cadbury Jaffa Race where an estimated 30,000 of the candy coated chocolate treats, each with a unique number stuck to it, hurtle down the street in a race to be first to the bottom.

Cadbury Confectionery, The Malcam Charitable Trust, and Dunedin City Council all work together to produce this unforgettable occasion. Tickets for a number on one of the Giant Jaffas are sold through schools across Otago and Southland to help raise precious funding. The Jaffa Race is one of the drawcard events of the week long Cadbury Chocolate carnival that runs from 11 - 17th July with local chocoholics being spoilt for choice for fun chocolate-themed events to partake in.

Food stalls and entertainment prior to the release of the jaffas gave a street party atmosphere to the occasion and Dunedin's weather did its part with a beautifully clear sunny day that helped swell the numbers to several thousand.
People continue to pour in to Baldwin Street as they prepare for the spectacle of thousands of giant jaffas rumbling down the world's steepest street. On the dot of 12.30pm the crowd gives the final countdown and volunteers at the top of the street release the jaffas to let them run wild in the race to be first to the finish chute.
In a matter of seconds it's all over and some lucky person holds the winning number of the first jaffa in to the finish chute. Unfortunately not all of the jaffas can make it to the bottom and the ones that do are a little worse for wear with the scars of the tumultuous tumble down the world's steepest street evident on those that made it to the finish chute.

The street party entertainment continues as the crowd makes its way home after the race as event organisers keep a close guard over the winning jaffas.
