Tourist Attractions

There are literally hundreds of things to see and do in Dunedin if you are visiting but here we have provided some information and links to just some of the most popular tourist attractions below that have won local, national, and international acclaim. For more information on other attractions in the city make sure you visit the Dunedin Visitor Centre in the Octagon who can provide you with all the tour guides and information packs you could possibly need!


Speights Brewery Tour


Still on the site that it has occupied since 1876, Speight's Brewery has become one of Dunedin and Otago's biggest icons. The Speight's brand being perhaps the best known commercial symbol to have originated in the city. The Speight's Heritage Centre provides an informative tour through the unique "gravity fed" working brewery (and museum) of the beer and brand, which is a passionate part of the history and culture of southern New Zealand.

Cadbury World

Located only a few minutes walk from the Octagon in the central city, Cadbury World is an absolute "must see" for any visitor to Dunedin. Tour the Visitors Centre and view many heritage and interactive displays - lots of fun for all ages and learn about the history of chocolate and Cadbury in New Zealand and some of the secrets and tricks of handling and cooking with chocolate.

Taieri Gorge Train Ride

The Taieri Gorge Limited train is Dunedin's prestige tourist train operating from the historic Railway Station. Departing daily (except Christmas day) it takes you on a journey through the rugged and spectacular Taieri River Gorge, across wrought iron viaducts and through tunnels carved by hand more than 100 years ago. With full commentary, photographic stops and on board refreshments the train offers year round, all-weather entertainment.

Larnach Castle

Discover New Zealand’s only Castle built 1871 by William Larnach. 200 workmen spent three years building the Castle shell and master European craftsmen spent a furthur 12 years embellishing the interior. The Castle is still privately owned and cared for by the Barker family. This superbly crafted building with magnificent architecture showcases a unique collection of New Zealand antiques, with a tragic and scandalous history. Spectacular tower views and beautiful gardens complete this enjoyable award winning experience. Boutique Lodge accommodation is available in the Castle gardens. Weddings, Balls, Functions and Celebrations are held in the beautiful 3000 square foot Ballroom.

Monarch Wildlife Cruises & Tours

Take a cruise up the Otago Harbour aboard The Monarch and see spectacular wildlife and scenery that cannot be seen from land including the mighty Northern Royal Albatross as it sweeps in from the open Pacific Ocean and soars above the spectacular inaccessible cliffs of Taiaroa. Operating since 1983 and winner of two New Zealand Tourism Board awards this is definitely another "must see" activity whilst visiting Dunedin.

Taiaroa Heads Royal Albatross Centre

Situated at Taiaroa Heads on the Otago Peninsula the Royal Albatross Centre gives visitors a chance to view interpretative wildlife displays, learn of the historical use of the area, and experience the famous Unique Taiaroa guided tours including the Royal Albatross Colony - the only mainland breeding colony of albatross in the world.

Peguin Place - Home of the Yellow Eyed Penguin

Penguin Place is the home of the Yellow Eyed Penguin Reserve, winner of Eco-Tourism Awards. Situated on the Otago Peninsula on the way to the Royal Albatross Colony at Taiaroa Heads, the reserve offers guided tours through the colony for some close up viewing of these beautiful birds. Covered trenches and observation huts hide visitors so the penguins will not be frightened and you are able to observe them going about their daily business unperturbed by your presence.

The Southern Heritage Trust

The Southern Heritage Trust, founded in December 2002, is based at the Sexton's Cottage in Dunedin's Northern Cemetery in partnership with the Dunedin City Council. The cottage is now an Information Gallery for the cemetery.

The aim of the website is to promote the diverse attractions and rich cultural heritage of the whole Otago region. The site is still in its infancy and we now invite interested parties to visit the site and submit their trails.

Cableways Tavern, Tramshed Bistro & Liquorland

No 93 is an orginal 1905 Roslyn car that ran up Rattray St past Speights Brewery, through to Ross St, then over the hill down to Kaikorai Valley Rd, to terminus South of Cableways (about 1 km).

Restored, having been bought from the Dunedin City Council for $1.00 you now have the unique opportunity to dine either side (seats 4-6), view photos of Roslyn cars in action last century, purhase/drink our own No 93 shiraz or sav blanc, or purchase 93 t-shirt/polo/glass/dvd or song by Denis Henderson(Southern Man)
